Is his app as easy to learn as EZD for simple groove selection and song creation? How is Addictive Drums in relative terms as far as ease of use?ĮDIT: Looks like EZD stores sound samples in proprietary OBW format.

I've also heard mention of Slate's software and looks like there are some low price point entries.

TL/DR version: how much is standardized/transferable between these apps vs how much is proprietary?Ħ.

Is there a way to 1) add a kit with brushes (or even just the brush snare alone), and 2) import a train beat loop? This is my immediate need, but the principle is I don't want to be buying expansion kits every time I need a new loop if there are free loops/kits that are good enough to satisfy my needs. I downloaded the EZDrummer demo which has only the Modern kits, none of which contain brushes. Given that these apps all work with sample files and MID files, can, for instance, one use a MID drum loop found elsewhere in EZDrummer? Can one add a sample or sample library from a free source or other manufacturer into EZDrummer?ĥ.

if volume value between X and Y on this MIDI channel, select XY audio file)? Or is that mapping information also somehow included in the MIDI note?Ĥ. Also, with samples that are recorded at different volumes, are those mappings all interpreted by the apps (i.e. Are all other file formats basically proprietary to the software? Are there some other universal standards they all (mostly) understand, so that one can move from one app to another if desired?ģ. So, all these applications basically work with MID files and audio samples (WAV, I'm guessing in most cases). EZDrummer) include other useful features like library browsers, mixers, post processors, ability to save as audio files, etc.Ģ. These triggers are then mapped to either sound generators (synths) or to samples by software applications. MIDI files are sequences of triggers that contain information about duration, volume, etc. The basic concept map I have (correct?) so far:

Can someone point me to a clear basic orientation on MIDI drums (and also as relates to Reaper)? I'm a MIDI newbie. So something like EZDrummer is appealing.ġ.

I'll definitely be doing more songs with drum tracks in the future, so willing to invest a bit for something that serves my songwriter purposes well- but I'm not going to need dedicated master professional drummer/programmer level. I know lots of people use EZDrummer, but there are so many add-ons I'm not sure how many/which pieces I'd have to buy to get this one groove/kit I need. So what do you recommend 1) for the guy who wants to focus on recording the music and not the drum programming, and 2) specifically for this song? Paid is fine, but I don't see the point in spending hundreds of bucks at this point either. I got the MT Power Drumkit, but it's obviously too limited for this specific project. Free is fine but I'd rather put out a little money in order to save as many headaches and as much time as possible.

So I'd prefer a plugin with lots of grooves and an easy composing interface and, of course, specifically a kit with brushes that has a train beat. For anything more than that, I'll work with a real drummer/programmer. Just want enough to get the idea across, and then enough tweaking to get it to sound decent.

While I've got enough music and tech smarts to figure out how to program drums if I want to, I really don't want to invest much time in it. Specifically, a train beat around 92 BPM *with brushes.* Pretty new to Reaper, doing mostly acoustic guitar/voice singer/songwriter recordings, but I'm a band player as well and I've got one new tune I'm working on I want to stick some drums behind my fingerpicked guitar.
